School Reader

Volunteers needed to listen to children read in East Sussex!

One in four children leave primary school unable to read to the expected standard. This means they are unable to fully access their secondary education which will have a life-long impact on their opportunities.

Schoolreaders is a national child literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read. We are calling out for more volunteers across East Sussex and the surrounding areas. If you can spare just an hour a week, you could change a child’s life story.

Volunteers visit their matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children to help improve their reading ability, their comprehension and also their enjoyment of reading. Often our volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.

Volunteers need to be over 18, have good written and spoken English and enjoy spending time with children. They do not need to have any specific skills or prior experience but will need to have a DBS check carried out, at no cost to themselves. They need to commit to staying at their school for a full year but holidays can be taken during this time.
