BBC Newsnight reports on latest survey results on ‘Food Insecurity’ from the Food Foundation

Latest data from The Food Foundation’s Food Insecurity Tracker, which featured on last night’s (17/10/22) BBC Newsnight programme (Watch from 28:13), show a worsening picture as the cost of living crisis deepens. The key findings are:

  • 18% of households (9.7 million adults) have experienced food insecurity in the past month – this has more than doubled since January.
  • One in four households with children (26%) have experienced food insecurity in the past month, affecting an estimated four million children. Since our last survey, this has increased at double the rate than in households without children.
  • Lack of money means cold food and cold water. 71% of households who have experienced food insecurity in the past month said they have cooked less, eaten food cold, turned off fridges or washed dishes in cold water.
  • People are also having to compromise the quality of their diets: among those experiencing food insecurity, 58% said they were buying less fruit and 48% said they were buying less vegetables.
