Organisation Sussex Prisoners' Families
Volunteers in this role will regularly attend support groups and service meetings, to assist
Sussex Prisoners’ Families (SPF) in supporting the family and friends of people serving a
custodial sentence.
The purpose of this role is to provide a familiar presence and to welcome
new attendees to group sessions, as well as to promote SPF services at organised events.
Volunteers will receive full training to prepare them for this role.
Your duties will include the following:
- Regularly attend SPF support groups in an assigned area (West Sussex).
- Take on the role of the designated attendee for the assigned SPF support group, creating
- Help new support group attendees to feel welcome and comfortable during the session.
- Offer emotional support and be available to those who may need assistance during
support groups. - Assist SPF staff in running support groups and service meetings, including setting up and
clearing down. - Work towards running a support group independently, with training and support from SPF
staff. - Assist SPF staff at community, networking and fundraising events, including setting up
and clearing down - Manage donations and activities during SPF events.
- Champion the services of SPF with members of the public, new clients and stakeholders.
- Pass on information on the experience of volunteering to other potential volunteers.

volunteer session on SPF monitoring forms and send these back to the office regularly. - Provide regular updates to SPF staff and raise any issues via individual and group
support sessions.

- Has the ability to communicate confidently with a wide range of people
- Able to work well independently and in a group setting
- Able to take a non-judgemental approach
- Willing to work within boundaries and in accordance with policies and procedures
- Able to keep a basic record of information given out at court and return this information
via an online form - Applicants will be required to attend an interview and provide two independent
references - It is very desirable for volunteers in this role to have lived experience of family-member
imprisonment or personal experience of imprisonment
