To help you avoid the penalties, we would like to remind you that whilst most NHS services are free of charge, some of those listed below have to be paid for, even if you receive Universal Credit or other benefits:
- NHS prescriptions
- NHS dental check-ups and treatment
- Sight tests, new glasses or contact lenses, repairing or replacing glasses or contact lenses
- NHS wigs
- NHS fabric supports – for example, surgical bras, support tights, and spinal supports
- Travel costs for NHS treatments
To find out if you are entitled to exemption of pay for the above NHS services, use the eligibility checker.
If you are unsure or waiting to find out if you are eligible for exemption or discount for the above NHS services, it is advised to pay for the NHS services used to avoid penalty. If you find out at a later stage that you are eligible for free NHS services, you will be able to apply for a refund on the fees you paid. For refund guidance, read Help with health costs booklet.
It is important to know that if you claim for free NHS services incorrectly, you could be issued a penalty charge and also pay for the services your received, as checks are made on claims for free NHS services.
