SpotlightReview of disability data standardsOn 17 July the ONS published its review of disability data harmonised standards: findings from phase two of their research. This report summarises the main findings from the second phase of the work to review the current long lasting health conditions and illness harmonised standard, activity restriction harmonised standard, and impairment harmonised standard. To ensure the research reflects the experiences of a broad range of views and perspectives, the teams involved worked closely with stakeholders from across government, academia, charities and disabled people’s organisations, as well as the public, to gather feedback on the current standards. They are grateful to all who have engaged with them as part of this research. The report is published to provide transparency and gather feedback on the work completed so far. It marks the conclusion of the discovery phase of work for the new harmonised disability and impairment harmonised standards. Data and release highlightsConceptions in England and Wales: 2022On 9 July, the ONS published statistics on annual conceptions in England and Wales for 2022. The publication looks at the numbers and rates of conceptions, abortions and births by variables such as age, location, and marital status. The release found that while the rate of conceptions remained unchanged from the previous year, the percentage of conceptions leading to abortion was the highest on record at 29.7%. Teenage conceptions rose from 2021 but remained below pre-pandemic levels. Geographical inequalities in premature mortality in England and Wales: March 2021 to December 2023On Tuesday 8 July, the ONS published findings on geographical inequalities in premature mortality. Using de-identified census data linked to death records, the report examines the association of sociodemographic factors with geographical variation in all-cause and cause-specific mortality for adults under 75. The findings show a clear association between where you live and your risk of dying prematurely. It also shows that much, but not all, of the differences between local authorities can be explained by socioeconomic characteristics, ethnicity, and whether someone was born in the UK.
