Council cracks down on fly-tippers in Eastbourne
Eastbourne Borough Council is urging businesses and residents to get rid of waste safely and responsibly after five fly-tipping fines were issued in less than three weeks.
The Fixed Penalty Notices were handed out by the council’s Neighbourhood First team between May 30 and June 19.
A construction company received two separate fines after being filmed on two occasions leaving furniture outside a recycling site; a hairdressing business was fined £200 for leaving trade waste by residential-only bins and three Eastbourne residents were each fined £200 for abandoning items on the seafront.
All fines were paid early, resulting in a reduced fee of £120.
Councillor Jim Murray, Cabinet Member for Carbon Neutral 2030, said: “We have a zero-tolerance policy for fly-tipping in Eastbourne. It is not only an eyesore but also a hazard to our community and harms our beautiful environment. These fines, issued by our diligent Neighbourhood First team, send a clear message: we will not hesitate to take action against those who blight our streets and public spaces. Keeping our environment tidy is a collective responsibility, and we are committed to ensuring Eastbourne remains a place we can all be proud of.”

Renewal of Eastbourne’s Anti-Social Driving Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO)
Eastbourne Borough Council is consulting on whether to extend the current Anti-Social Driving Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for another three years.
In response to public concerns, the Council introduced the PSPO in 2022 to address anti-social driving. The order outlines a list of prohibited behaviours, including:
- Revving engines
- Rapid acceleration
- Speeding and racing
- Excessive vehicle noise
- Off-road driving on public land
The PSPO is active from April to October each year and applies to specific ‘restricted areas’ where such behaviours have been frequently reported. Sussex Police enforce the order on behalf of the Council.

Have your say on improving housing in East Sussex
East Sussex County Council want to hear from people and organisations with an interest in housing, about what you think of the draft strategy for improving housing in East Sussex.
East Sussex Housing Partnership works to meet local housing needs in the county. The partnership is made up of the five local housing authorities, housing providers and partners from across health, social care, children’s services, criminal justice and the voluntary and community sector.
The strategy aims to improve housing in East Sussex and support the five local housing authorities’ individual strategies. It will also guide future service planning, including opportunities to secure additional funding.

Yellow Heat Alert issued for South East
A Yellow Heat Health alert has been declared for the South East.
A cool living space is especially important for infants, older people or those with long-term health conditions. Close blinds and curtains on windows that are exposed to direct sunlight, move to the coolest part of your home and open windows (if it is safe to) when the air feels cooler outside than inside.
Find out more about the heat alert on the UK Health Security Agency webpage.
Help shape the future of our coastline
The Pevensey Bay to Eastbourne Coastal Management Scheme is developing a long-term strategy to protect our coastline from the increasing impacts of climate change. Spanning the stretch from Holywell to Cooden Beach, this plan focuses on the interventions needed beyond 2037.
With sea levels projected to rise by over a metre by the end of the century and storm patterns expected to shift, our current defences—such as beach management and groyne upgrades—will not be sufficient in the long term.
This marks the beginning of an important conversation about how we adapt and safeguard our cherished coastline.
What does this coastline mean to you?
Whether you sail, stroll, swim, or simply enjoy the view, your insights will help shape a 100-year plan for our coast.
