Six members of Eastbourne’s refugee, asylum and migrant community have recently completed an intensive six-week teacher training course in mindful movement. The course, held at the Eastbourne Therapy Hub and organised by Sanctuary CIC Eastbourne, was funded by Homes for Ukraine and Estar, and delivered by the Brighton Natural Foundation.
Participants from Ukraine, Iran and the Congo took part in the training, which covered the history and roots of mindful movement, trauma-sensitive teaching, meditation, strength, flexibility and class planning. Each student finished the course by creating and leading a mindful movement session for the local community.
Mindful movement is a powerful practice with deep historical and spiritual roots. It helps people connect with their bodies and breath, bringing a sense of calm and grounding. It has been shown to ease stress, anxiety and pain, improve mood, support emotional balance, and build strength, flexibility and connection.
“In a world where more than 25% of people struggle with depression or anxiety, and many live with chronic pain and illness, there’s a growing recognition of the need for accessible and inclusive community classes,” says Sam Hart, director of Brighton Natural Foundation.

The training has had a transformative effect on the graduates and has equipped them with skills not just to manage their own well-being, but to help others in the community do the same. N.F.
“This course has reminded me that even the smallest movement—like softening the jaw or unclenching the toes—can be revolutionary. And that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is sit… and simply notice,” says course graduate M. M.
