“I had lost a friend to suicide a few years ago, and since then I’ve wanted to give back and help others because we only live once, right? As for the time, it’s easy to make time when you really want something.”
Until I was introduced to Justin Wright by a mutual friend, I had no idea what Fler and the family had been through and I selfishly thought to myself how would I cope if cancer hit my family. Justin started talking about Wolo and the amazing work they do for families in situations they themselves had just been through. Most people would feel sorry for themselves, but they took the positives out of their situation and work tirelessly to help others. They really do touch your heart when you speak to them.
What does a trustee do?
“It’s all quite new to me, but it is a great position – you can do as much or as little as you want to do. You set the goalposts around your own life commitments – and it is unbelievably rewarding. I love fundraising so I’m going to focus on events that help make money. I’ll bully people into helping – in the nicest way, of course! Anybody who knows me knows I am always fundraising, be it running a race, bingo nights, a raffle or cake sale, I am always up to something.”
Covid-19 ‘Good News’
After helping a friend raise £900 for Chestnut Tree House in April, Steph – who loves running – then arranged a pay-to-enter virtual ‘Time Trial’ online in June, opening it up to other running clubs in Sussex, too. Basically people donated £1 to WOLO, ran as far as they could in 30 mins, then posted their results online. Super successful, other clubs are now running similar events. Steph has also run a half-marathon to raise money for Alzheimers.
Competition and helping others obviously ‘runs’ in the family, as Lewis, her 12-year- old son, also organised a virtual 5K running event of his own in May – using social media – and raised a fabulous £140 for WOLO. He even sourced cheap-but-cheerful medals as prizes! Amazing.
What happens next?
Apart from finding new fundraising ideas – virtual bingo nights are coming soon! – Steph especially wants to inspire other people to think about becoming trustees, promising: “By doing something good for others it makes me feel good about myself, too. It’s quite catching – the more you do, the more you want to do.”
