Drugs and alcohol misuse can often be normalised within families so early detection can reduce further escalation, offer appropriate support to both parent and child, and limit the impact on the children including their own relationship with substances which can at times mirror parental misuse.
Alcohol and other drug use can put children at risk of harm and abuse, effects to their physical and mental well-being, anti-social behaviour, effects to their school attendance and grades, being exposed to criminal activity which can lead to child criminal exploitation, serious illness and/or death.
