New research published today by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) carries a stark message on the challenges faced by health and social care services in England and has highlighted the importance of feedback for improving care

CQC’s research uncovered the impact of lockdown measures on the wellbeing of people who use care services. Nearly three quarters of carers (73%) say that the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions have had an impact on the mental health of the person they care for. Over half (56%) of carers say that the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions have had an impact on the dignity and independence of the person they care for.

Following a number of enquiries about the future of the Bandstand, we thought that the following update would be helpful.

Firstly, there have been queries about the money allocated to repairs on the Bandstand. To clarify, on March 16, 2020, the council’s Cabinet approved £3m as part of our capital programme for priority works to the Bandstand.  

But, a week later on March 23, the Prime Minister put the country into lockdown. 

This had a catastrophic impact on the economy. Our income from tourism stopped overnight, at the same time that our spending soared as we prioritised support for the most vulnerable in Eastbourne.  A reset of our capital programme was required.

The capital programme is not money we have in the bank but money that we borrow for major works and can be repaid from our revenue, but the loss of income as a result of the lockdown impacted greatly on this, hence the need for a reset.

The first stage of this is £750,000 for repairs to the stage and to address health and safety issues. Subject to approval by Full Council on February 23, this work will take place this year and the Bandstand will reopen in time for the 2023 season.

With two-thirds of adults seeing their cost of living rise in the last month, our article published today on energy prices and their effects shows how lower income households may be hit disproportionately by rising gas and electricity bills.

Wholesale gas prices are around four times higher than in early 2021, with consumer prices for gas and electricity rising by 17.1% and 8.7% respectively last October.

This followed a 12% rise in the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) energy price cap last October. The price cap, which limits prices consumers on default tariffs can be charged for their energy, will be reviewed again this month.

Any further rises may disproportionately affect lower income households, as they spend a higher proportion of their income on utility bills and are more likely to be in fuel poverty.

Crowdfunder has over £10 million in match funding available to support community projects and businesses. There are several pots of extra funding from a selection of national and regional partners which – depending on what a project is doing – may be available to help projects to raise more funds. Also, there is up to £2,500 in match funding on offer from the East Sussex County Council Building Stronger Communities Fund when you raise funds on Crowdfunder.

If you are looking to develop a project in East Sussex and looking to raise funds through Crowdfunder, Crowdfunder are holding drop-in sessions every Monday of this month (14th, 21st and the 28th) where you can book at 20 minute time slot to speak with our experts on how to crowdfund. There have already been successful projects such as The Havens Community Hub who received £2,500 of the Building Stronger Communities (BSC) funding and went on to raise a total of £12,440. Come to our drop-in sessions and find out how you might be able to start crowdfunding.

Following several hugely popular tree planting events last year, Treebourne is now seeking volunteers to help plant new trees in Old Ratton in the last weekend of February.

This exciting project will see the planting of 2,000 trees, comprising of 14 different species that are native to the UK, including disease-resistant Elms.

Part of the South Downs National Park and located behind Old Ratton Estate, Treebourne has been given the opportunity to renew an area which has lost a significant number of Ash trees.

To do this, Treebourne is running 5 volunteer sessions of 2 hours each over the weekend of the Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 of February.

We’re all going to feel the squeeze from April as the energy price hike and the increase in national insurance payments both kick in at the same time as prices for food and fuel continue to creep upwards. 

It is the UK’s poorest households and those who have also lost the £20 Covid uplift in universal credit who will be hit most badly. People with mental health problems more often fall into this group, and money problems often cause mental health problems.

Lewes Community Kitchen | 12 & 13 April 2022

Two days of training and mentoring for people wanting to teach cookery, set up community food activities and social enterprises.

Our aim is to empower and motivate you to create projects that promote health and wellbeing, build community and sustainable food systems.

This training will help you to:

• Plan a cookery course, club or community food project.
• Be a better cook.
• Understand more about the food we eat.
• Support others in improving their cookery and everyday nutrition skills.
• Work effectively with groups and share your enthusiasm for good food.
• Develop a social enterprise.
• Make healthy cohesive communities.
• Create a sustainable food system.

In addition to the two days of training, participants receive ongoing mentoring and support. The course includes a recipe book, training manual, lunch, refreshments and food to go.

East Sussex Community Voice are asking people aged between 16 and 24, who live in the County of East Sussex (excluding Brighton and Hove) to complete this survey to help us improve early support for young people in East Sussex who self-harm (or are at risk of self-harm).

Self-harm can be defined as ‘the act of deliberately causing harm to oneself either by causing a physical injury, by putting oneself in dangerous situations and/or self-neglect’.

This survey, co-produced with young people, will help us to gain a better understanding of : 

young people’s awareness of, and access to self-harm information. 
the role of support networks  
young people’s views and experiences of the initial support they may have received in relation to self-harm 

Please note we are not seeking to establish prevalence of self-harm locally, or to understand the details of individuals’ self-harm behaviours.

The findings of this survey will contribute towards a needs assessment being undertaken by East Sussex County Council and partners which will help inform how locally we can best: 

prevent self-harm in children and young people 
respond to children and young people who are self-harming 

The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete and after completing respondents can enter a prize draw to win one of three £50 vouchers.

The survey closes at midnight on Tuesday 1st March 2022.

People in East Sussex are being asked for their views on plans to improve the cardiology (heart) and ophthalmology (eye) services at hospitals in East Sussex.

The proposals aim to improve the care available and cut waiting times. They will also enable staff to develop their skills and expertise so more patients in East Sussex can benefit from new medical treatments and technologies.

The two separate sets of proposals have been developed over the last year by hospital doctors, GPs and other health professionals. They looked at feedback from people who use and work in local services alongside evidence of what works well elsewhere in the NHS.

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport is launching phase 1 of the Youth Investment Fund.

The aim of the fund is to create, expand and improve local youth facilities and their services, in order to drive positive outcomes for young people, including improved health and wellbeing, and skills for work, employability and life.

Lewes District Council has received further limited funding from central government and has reopened this fund for applications. If you, or someone you know, is eligible, please apply without delay.  

If you’re finding it difficult to keep warm, buy enough food or pay essential bills, you may be able to get extra help. Residents across East Sussex can now apply for help from the Government’s Household Support Fund, which local councils are now helping to pay out.

To qualify, you must live within the council’s area, be over the age of 18, and be finding it difficult to pay for heating, lighting, water bills or food. You must also be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

• Universal Credit
• Housing Benefit
• Pension Credit
• Council Tax Reduction Benefit
• Child Tax Credit
• Working Tax Credit
• Income Support
• Income Based Job-Seeker’s Allowance
• Income Based Employment & Support Allowance

The next round of applications for the Social Enterprise Covid Fund opens on 28 February and will be accompanied by information webinars in March.

Grants of between £10,000 and £100,000 are available to help social enterprises with a pre-Covid income of between £20,000 to £1.8m to recover - particularly organisations whose main source of income was trading. This could be restarting certain activities in a Covid safe way, or developing new income streams.

There is a big focus on supporting diverse led organisations and they must be incorporated, have clear social purpose and asset lock. More information in the guidance notes can be found here.

Charities with an annual income of between £25,000 and £1 million can still apply for unrestricted grants of up to £50,000 and accompanying development support from the Lloyds Bank Foundation for England and Wales.

Eligible charities must demonstrate a track record of undertaking work related to the following Complex Social Issues:

Addiction and dependency.
Asylum seekers and refugees.
Care leavers.
Domestic and sexual abuse.
Homelessness and vulnerable housing situations.
Learning disabilities.
Mental health.
Offending, prison or community service.
Sexual exploitation.
Trafficking and modern slavery.
Young parents.
Two-year funding is available for core organisational costs which are related to the day-to-day running of the charity. Consideration will only be given to requests for core costs where over 50% of the charity's work and expenditure meets the Foundation's criteria. Funding is also available for costs associated with the direct delivery of the charity's work.

The Foundation has introduced regional priorities to ensure that its portfolio of grants is equitably distributed across the 11 complex social issues and the regions in England and Wales. This means the size of grant a charity can apply for, or whether they can apply at all at the moment, depends on Local Authority and the complex social issue the charity’s work is addressing.

Applications can be submitted at any time.

Sussex Community Foundation has announced a further donation of £195,000 from East Sussex County Council (ESCC) to the Sussex Crisis Fund, specifically to support food security projects in East Sussex.

ESCC donated £100,000 to the fund in the first weeks of the pandemic. The Sussex Crisis Fund has now given out an incredible £2 million in emergency funding in just 20 weeks.

There is no set deadline for applications as reviews are made on an on-going basis.

Lewes District Council is accepting applications from businesses that are eligible for the Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant. The scheme was announced by the Government on 21 December in recognition of the rise in the Omicron variant and the impact it was having on those sectors.

The Afghanistan Veterans’ Fund aims to increase capacity in services and initiatives that offer supportive comradeship, engagement and wellbeing efforts for those in the Armed Forces community impacted by events in Afghanistan, and the wider veterans community.

The Office for Veterans' Affairs has asked the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust to run programmes that will award grants to improve wellbeing, resilience and promote good mental health. There are four funding strands and you can only apply to one strand. 

These grants are aimed at community-led arts and culture projects, with a focus on equality and inclusion, and which approach the subject of dying in an innovative or creative way.

We're looking for activities which take place in communities, outside of formal healthcare settings, which help make it easier for people to talk about death and dying.

The Screwfix Foundation is accepting funding applications for consideration at its next Trustee meeting.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available to fix, repair, maintain and improve properties and community facilities specifically for those in need.

Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC) Katy Bourne is inviting organisations across the county to bid for funding to help keep Sussex safe.

Grants of up to £5,000 are available for groups that provide a positive and lasting impact on the local community in Sussex.

To qualify, projects should demonstrate how they will increase or promote community safety within the local area and have a positive long-term impact. They should also be able to offer evidence to support the need for the project and show how it helps to prevent offending and reduce re-offending.

Application deadline: 25 February at 11:59pm

The Green Match Fund is a match funding campaign for charities which are working on environmental issues as part of their core mission.

All public donations made to participating charities via The Big Give website during the week of the campaign (22-29 April 2022) will be matched up to a specific amount.

Each participating charity will be awarded a ring-fenced amount of match funding which will be used to match public donations - either £2,500, £5,000 or £10,000.

The #LetsCreate Jubilee Fund supports voluntary and community groups to develop creative and cultural activities as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June. Applicants applying for over £5,000 must partner with an artist, creative or cultural organisation to help deliver their project.

In partnership with Virgin Media O2, Hubbub is launching a £400,000 fund to make tablets and free data available to community organisations across the UK. The fund is exclusively supporting organisations such as local authorities, charities and social enterprises who work closely with temporary accommodation services, such as centres for refugees, housing for those at risk of homelessness or women’s refuges.

The grant will provide one-off, start-up funding of between £50,000 - £120,000 per organisation, to establish or further develop Tech Lending Hubs, where tablets will be loaned to residents in temporary accommodation on a temporary basis. Successful applicants will need to demonstrate that they will be actively collaborating with community groups to ensure that the provision of a tablet loaning service will have a transformative impact.

East Sussex County Council continues to partner with Crowdfunder to support community projects to raise funds to create positive change in East Sussex.

Grants of up to £2,000 are being offered to promote ecological science, thanks to the British Ecological Society.

It supports projects that:

• Increase public understanding of, and engagement with, ecology.
• Stimulate discussion about ecology and its implications for society.
• Inspire and enthuse people of all ages about the science of ecology, especially those not previously interested.
• Develop skills in communicating the science of ecology.

The Rampion Community Benefit Fund is a grant set up by Rampion Offshore Wind Ltd and managed by Sussex Community Foundation. The fund supports projects that benefit the local community, in particular those with links to environment and ecology, climate change and energy.

The Voluntary & Community Sector Emergencies Partnership has ring-fenced an incentive pot of £20,000 to promote the engagement of organisations both within and beyond the partnership, to provide insight and/or intelligence on topic(s) that are emergency focussed in either preparedness or response and that ‘fill a gap’ in our collective knowledge.

Sussex Community Foundation’s next General Awards round deadline has been announced. We are encouraging applications across the whole of Sussex in the usual way but can confirm two main changes to our grants criteria from the next round. We will be open to applicants with an income of up to £2 million and will be able to consider grants of up to £10,000, rather than up to £5,000.

Our priority will be to continue to support the smallest, grassroots organisations across Sussex but the increase in income threshold is intended to allow support for a wider range of organisations, including those who have a broader reach and geography.

We hope that the increase in the grant amount offered will allow our support to extend over a longer period, so for some organisations, to fund delivery over 12 months rather than 3-6 months. Both these changes are in response to feedback received over the past year.

We will be holding our next funding advice surgery on 1 April. If you would like to register your interest, please email our grants team and we will send you the booking information nearer the time.
